Nabugabo Research Site (NRS)

Fee Schedule 2025

Mission : To facilitate multidisciplinary training and generation of knowledge of the extensive Lake Nabugabo Ramsar Site unique ecosystem based on its minimally explored high biodiversity and interplay with local communities.

Main facilities: Three Bandas with bunk beds, storage rooms, electricity, field lab and additional housing for up to 40 people in collaboration with Sacred Heart Sisters, adjacent to NRS. There are plans to expand facilities in the future.

  • 178.4 Km from Entebbe International airport via Kampala Capital City 
  • 19 Km from Masaka City (13 Km tarmac and 6 Km good murram section)

NRS Fee structure for foreign researchers & students

Access to facilities

General user fees $15 USD (per person per day)

These fees include expenses on and access to the following:

  1. Electricity
  2. A common kitchen
  3. Water for domestic use (water for aquatic research is mainly from the lake just a few meters off the premises)
  4. Grass cutting
  5. Routine maintenance
  6. Emergencies – security
  7. Simple troubleshooting
  8. Behind the scenes liaison with local communities and authorities
  9. Access to Field Assistants (FAs) with basic training in terrestrial and/or aquatic research (for an additional fee – see below)
  10. Storage (short-term included, long-term see below)
  11. Field lab
  12. Access to habituated monkey groups

Accommodation (per person per day)

  1. NRS Bandas with bunk beds $7 USD (per person per night)
  2. Sacred Heart sisters $15 USD (per person per night)
  3. Camping:
    • Own tent $3 USD
    • NRS tent $5 USD

Other Fees

Boat use for research – $15 USD per person per day

Long-term equipment storage – $100 USD/year

General activities/Items

  1. Guided boat rides fees (goes to maintenance, engine service, boat rider/driver/guide, life jackets) – $15 USD/person
  2. Facilitation of permits processing and follow up fees (does not include transport) – $200USD/permit*
  3. Occasional FAs – $10 USD for each Field Assistant per day
  4. Principle (long-term) Researchers monthly research site user fee – $100 USD

*Note: cost of actual permit is the responsibility of the researcher
